Log in faster with a passkey!

Hey folks! You might already have seen Amazon, Google, and other big sites offering passkey logins—well, good news, Discourse supports them, too! Rather than messing around with usernames and passwords, we encourage you to log into SCW Discourse with a passkey.

Not sure what passkeys are? Here’s a great explanation from the EFF on how passkeys work, how they came to be, and why they beat the pants off of traditional passwords. (The short version is that passkeys authenticate you via public/private-key encryption instead of a traditional password, and they’re usually protected by a PIN or by biometric authentication like your device’s fingerprint or face scanner.)

tl;dr? No more complex passwords—instead, log in with a quick tap or glance!

To set up a passkey, visit your account’s security page, select “Add passkey”, and follow the prompts from your browser or device:

If you plan on logging into SCW Discourse on more than one device (like a computer and also a smartphone), you can create one passkey on each device, or you can sync a single passkey to all your devices via most browsers or password managers. Either strategy works!

(For the truly geeky, fear not: Discourse also offers a variety of two-factor authentication options for those who wish to add a second layer of security on their accounts. Explore your account’s security options to learn more!)
