A weak 'front' will bring unsettled weather to end the week, but the weekend outlook improves

Originally published at: A weak ‘front’ will bring unsettled weather to end the week, but the weekend outlook improves – Space City Weather

In brief: We may see an additional round of storms this afternoon as a disturbance drops into the area, and then fairly widespread showers are likely on Thursday and Friday. The outlook for the weekend is sunnier, with lower rain chances.

A few more words about August

I wanted to share some feedback I received after yesterday’s comments about August weather in Houston. (If you don’t remember, I basically said there is nothing redeeming about August’s weather here). This person wrote in to say:

“I really like the in-depth forecasts, but the continued complaining about Houston’s hot & humid climate does not serve you well … If you moved here from a colder climate, and you don’t like the heat here, why torture yourself? Move back and enjoy your life. But if you’re going to call yourself a Texan, a Houstonian, or just live here, please consider dropping the complaints. It’s one reason I don’t frequent your site more.”

First of all, thank you for the feedback. We are always looking to improve the site and be more responsive to reader needs. However, I will be ignoring this suggestion. Yes, I realize that there are some people who like peak summer weather in Houston. Bless your hearts. However I do call myself a Houstonian (having lived here for 28 years), and one of the defining things about being a Houstonian is the God-given right to complain about the summer weather here. If that turns you off, I’ll just have to live with that.

Wednesday

Today is an interesting one. We should see sunny skies and hot and humid weather, withs high pushing into the upper 90s this afternoon for all but inland areas. However, an upper level disturbance should drop down from north of the region later this afternoon and push into the city. I’ll be frank, the modeling has not been consistent with this. However, given what we have seen in recent days, and the abundant moisture in the atmosphere, I feel confident in predicting that some parts of the metro area will see rain this afternoon or early evening, and that some of these showers will turn into thunderstorms (possibly severe). So be on the lookout for storms later today, but they may very well not hit. Overall rain chances are probably only about 40 percent. Lows tonight will only drop to around 80 degrees.

Thursday and Friday

A frontal boundary will ooze into the area to end the work week, and while this won’t provide much in the way of dry air or cooler temperatures, it should be the spark for some fairly widespread showers and thunderstorms. Rain totals will, as is often the case, be highly variable across the region. I expect most of us to receive 0.5 to 1.5 inch, with higher bullseyes perhaps a little more likely south and east of the city. In any case, you should be prepared for downpours to interrupt outdoor activities, but it won’t rain all of the time. Highs should be a little lower, in the low- to mid-90s, with warm, humid nights.

Saturday and Sunday

As high pressure expands from our west this weekend it should slightly dry out the atmosphere and reduce daily rain chances to about 30 percent. These days should, accordingly, be mostly sunny with high temperatures probably in the vicinity of the mid-90s.

Next week

Next week is the final full week of August. Fortunately we look to be ending the month with (for Houston) relatively modest conditions, with highs in the low to mid-90s, and daily rain chances of maybe 20 to 40 percent. Another dying front will approach the area later in the week, but I’m not sure it will have that much sensible impact on our weather. We’ll see.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I was born here and I’ve lived here for 47 years, and I’ll be continuing to call myself a Texan and a Houstonian and I’ll also be continuing to complain, thanks very much. I don’t need someone who’s probably a transplant anyway telling me that their opinion about summer is more valid than mine. :yellow_heart:

edited to add — LOL, speaking of, if you’ve got feelings about the weather, join a seasonal group and get a “Team Winter/Spring/Summer/Fall” badge!

Houston native here for over 30 years. The summer weather is awful here. You’re either steaming in humidity or worried about what the next storm will bring until that glorious week in October or November when the lows drop below 60.

We sane people who hate and fear the summer here appreciate you bringing it up.

Originally from New Zealand but have lived in Houston for 16 years. While the heat and humidity can be bad, it’s the mosquitoes that should all burn in hell!

Good for you! I lived in Houston 55 years and just this summer moved to Ohio. I still keep reading your daily forecasts partly because I love your frankness, humor, and candor. Complaining about the August summer was one of those things that I felt brought us together as a community to commiserate over. Don’t we all need things to help us form common bonds rather than divisions? Keep to your guns and just tell it like it is, ignoring the critics!!!

It is well put that there should not be significant complaining inserted into a website frequented for needed weather information. A very infrequent, mild complaint would not be out of bounds, but complainers are never appreciated. Limit yourself to two complaints per year, if you need a rule of thumb. Simply put, excessive complaining is unprofessional, irritating, and a turn off. This is not why your readers are here! Some of us will go elsewhere, without a doubt.
True Texans are two things: (1) They are strong and stoic, and (2) they can trace their lineage back to life-long people who have lived here since at least their great grandparents’ generation. Anyone more recent is a carpetbagger, and there are way too many here in our great city and state.

I’m not sure what annoys me more, the righteous indignation that somehow the only reason you’d hate or complain about the heat is if you moved here from elsewhere, or people who try to tell others what they can or can’t talk about on their own spaces. If you don’t like then don’t read. I’m gonna be right here with you having lived my entire 39 years of life here complaining all day every day because the heat is RIDICULOUS.

I may beat you all with the number of years in Houston. 70 years of heat and humidity coming up soon. I think that my first words were “It’s hot, Mama”!

When my native Houstonian daughter flies in from Denver for a visit she says that once they open up the plane door, that Houston heat and humidity hit her and it’s “Ahh, home in Houston”!

I’m gonna join in to say I’ve been here 34 years and August is always the worst with September a close second. This Summer has been a tiny bit better because of all the rain, but I’m still looking forward to October

I agree, it annoys the heck out of me when people get mad about others complaining about the weather like we are all supposed to just love and worship evey type of weather we get everyday or something. This is a weather forum and people are here to discuss weather. And let’s be honest, the weather is not very pleasant most of the time over most places on Earth, so I think people have a right to complain about it. If you don’t want to see people complaining about demonstrably bad weather, than you can always go somewhere else.

It’s like going over to a movie critic forum and getting mad when you see people complaining about a bad movie. I’ve never understood it. Lol

I was born in Austin, grew up in Georgetown, went to college in College Station, and moved to Houston in 1990. I have solid native Texans cred, and I dare anyone to accuse me of not being a Houstonian.

If there is one thing we all have, it’s the God given right to complain about the weather in August. Which is to say from June 15 to October 15.

I am getting my daughter moved into her sophomore year apartment in Waco today, it’s forecast to be 103, and I started bitching and moaning about it at 6am.

Complaining about it is a badge of sanity….

Is it in my head, or does it feel rather nice this morning? The morning low at the Angleton airport was 71 and it is 73 now. So I guess its not in my head after all.

I’m Houstonian, born and raised. My family has been in Houston since the 19th century. It’s my God-given right to complain about August heat. And I will do so each time I have to experience it lol. Gotta have a way to cope.

Anyway good on you for ignoring that. You can’t please everyone, but I’m sure glad you do what you do!

I’m a Houston native who lives in the Denver area myself and I don’t miss that part that’s for sure. But the Houston food makes up for it!

Been here for 40 years. Not only is August too hot most of the time (remember 2011?), but it’s getting hotter, especially the overnight lows, although this year hasn’t been as bad as recent years, a reason to be happy–but Houston in August is still too darn hot!!!

Nah, I think I’m gonna ask @Eric if I can do a weekly guest column on the front page specifically dedicated to complaining about the heat. We can take reader submissions!

As a native Houstonian I do complain about the weather in August and even in other months as well. Its part of living in Texas, almost a tradition. I think it’s fun editorial and honestly can’t we all use a smile or two?

I’ve been told by “Native Texans” (I suppose their predecessors were here when the first Spanish explorers first arrived?) that I’m a “Damn Yankee,” because I visited from “the North” a few times but decided to stay 28 years ago. A mere “Yankee” returns home. Yes, August can be a bear, but that’s more than balanced out by “not having to shovel winter weather.”

I’ve lived in Texas my entire life and in Houston since 1994. I’ll continue to complain about the god awful summer weather and also complain about people who profess to like it. I like being comfortable and I hate having to spend significantly more money on electricity.
