A little more fall-like in Houston, but still some warmer temps and humidity to come

Originally published at: A little more fall-like in Houston, but still some warmer temps and humidity to come – Space City Weather

In brief: A warmer and sunnier stretch of weather should await the Houston area this week, albeit with lower humidity levels. The tropics are not a concern for us at this time, with any Gulf tropical system likely staying well to our south and east. We turn hotter and more humid this weekend and early next week.

I don’t know if Sunday was the unofficial first fall day in Houston, but the weather behaved that way to an extent. Overcast skies, some light rain and drizzle, and the hangover of a disappointing sports week seemed to make it so. Our high temperature yesterday was 81°, the coolest daytime high since July 14th, when we only hit 79°. This type of weather won’t last, however, as we move into something of a more typical warm autumn setup for the rest of this week.

Today

We have some lingering clouds this morning. And those clouds may be a bit stubborn, especially south and east of Houston. There will continue to be a shower chance to the southeast too with the cool front sitting just offshore. But overall we’ll call today partly cloudy to perhaps eventually mostly sunny, with highs likely bouncing back into the mid-80s.

Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday

As of now we expect all three days to be generally partly cloudy to mostly sunny. Highs will probably be in the upper 80s. Morning lows may not be too bad on Tuesday, with a chance that some places outside of Beltway 8 drop into the 60s.

Daytimes will be hot with those upper-80s, but the humidity levels will be less oppressive and more typical for October. There could be some showers, especially by Wednesday or Thursday, and especially south and east of Houston each afternoon.

Tropics & late week through the weekend

I wrote about the tropical disturbance in the southwest Gulf and Bay of Campeche yesterday at The Eyewall. I’ll have another update on that later today or tonight.

But the short takeaway is that we should not need to worry much about this system here in Texas. With a front draped offshore, and general southwest to northeast flow pattern, whatever happens there, be it a slopfest of moisture or a stronger tropical storm or hurricane will likely be carried to our east.

This is also well reflected in the model forecast of precipitation anomalies, which you can see over the next 7 to 10 days will likely end up well above normal south and east of our area.

So for Houston, this means that we will probably continue with these seasonably warm temperatures that may gradually trend to more unseasonably warm as we go toward the weekend and next week. We’ll probably see the humidity return late this week as well. This time, however, it does look at a front or fronts will break things up sometime next week. We’re beginning to see the pace of fronts slowly increase, which should mean that any higher humidity periods should be shorter-lived than they have been since September.

The summer that just refuses to end….

I’ve really enjoyed the change of weather the past week! A little bit of clouds and spotty rain keeps me guessing on what will happen next.

Y’all have been doing a great job at writing about the changing weather each day. I guess it wouldn’t be weather if it didn’t change.

A slopfest of moisture, lol

This morning was really nice. I’m looking forward to more of this!!

Sadly my yard only had a tenth of an inch of rain out of all those rain days. Fortunately, since we are heading into a strong El Nino, we should start getting widespread frequent soaking rains in the not too distant future hopefully.

How much longer for mornings in the 50s and highs in the low 70s?

Probably January 2027.

Shortly before the named 2027 winter storm?

@rflores23 One source (TWC online) shows it close to that starting around the 17th. We’ll see.

I will certainly believe that when I see it. Or feel it.

arent cold fronts supposed to blow hurricanes away from us, this time of year? Its extremely concerning going forward, if we no long get cold fronts in october.

@rflores23 That’s a tricky question to answer, maybe better a weather expert than me. The best setup (I think) would be much like it is now, with us on the north side of the front and the front out in the Gulf. If we were south of the front, then it might depend on how close the front is and the location and movement of the system. Using Ike as an example, there was a decent cool front to the north of us when Ike came through, and roughly two days after we had nights in the low 60’s. That front may have actually helped to steer Ike toward us. Had the front been one or two days closer to us, it very well could have pushed Ike further east and away from us.

@rflores23 I forgot to add that by October the steering currents in the Gulf are different than they are in August and September and that helps keep tropical systems away from here for lack of any fronts.

Was reading through some of my old journal entries and apparently October 12th, 2018 was the first day that felt like fall to me back in 2018. Hopefully fall this year doesn’t wait too much longer than that. Hope springs eternal.

There was a cat 2 hurricane that made landfall in Brazoria County in October, 1949, also aided by a passing and retreating cool front. That was a total fluke of course but the possibility is still there nonetheless.

I appreciate you bringing up that cold front during Ike. A real cold front could not have come at a better time. We had lost power for only 2 days but it was so tolerable because my memory was that over night we got into the high 60s and the days were about 83-84 degrees.

It’s going to be alot later than that this year I’m afraid. And summer is becoming more eternal in these parts.

Looking at that blob in the Gulf I had a flashback to Beryl.
