Daily storm chances continue as August plods onward

Was reacting using irony? to a previous way-out-there comment on the GFS because I thought that something was in the Gulf.

I don’t really like this new feature where replies are replayed further down the string. Have to be careful out of context replies are not misunderstood.

The yellow blob is 99L. NHC doesn’t put up graphics like unless there’s something to watch.

Right—you’re talking about the difference between a “threaded” discussion (where replies are posted in a “thread” directly below their parents posts), versus a “flat” discussion (where replies are shown chronologically).

Discourse tries to walk the middle line by mostly being “flat,” but also allowing you to reply to specific posts and leaving a little “This is a reply to…” doodad on each post. (Look at your reply to @Jesse just above this one as an example.) If you click or tap that doodad, it’ll expand to show the post you’re replying to.

For a belt-and-suspenders kind of approach, you can do what I did for this message and quote the text you’re replying to. Just highlight it, and a “Quote” thingy will pop up. Tap that, and you’ll get a new post window with the quote you want to reply to already at the top. (I usually do this when i’m replying, just to make the context ultra-clear!)

It’s definitely OK to have strong opinions about the “right” way to display discussions—threaded-vs-flat is one of those holy war topics online, like Macs-vs-PCs and soft-g-“gif”-vs-hard-g-“gif” The Discourse devs made the choice to do things this way, but plenty of other places (like reddit, or like WP’s native commenting system!) do things the other way. It’s all part of life’s rich tapestry or something

Matt specifically said he was leery of 99L, and that it could sneak under the radar and ultimately find the Caribbean.

And the NHC has it flagged.

Lee, thank you. I was unaware of the fact that they used min/max thermometers prior to going automated. I am quite sure it was thought of before. I just did not know the answer which is why I asked the question…

Apologies for the abrupt tone, @Glenn—trying to do too many things at once this morning and also keep an eye on the comments. :yellow_heart:

The ‘yellow blob’ isn’t out 11 days - it’s within seven days & that’s why the NHC put it there this morning.

Gotcha! That works. Thankee I shall also endeavor to think more before replying too!
