**In brief:** Drought continues to expand across the Houston area with continued sunshine. More of that to come, but we are watching some potential for rain by late next week or around Halloweekend. Don’t alter your plans yet though, as we have a lot of questions still in front of us.

We’ve done well this week with lows generally in the 50s and some lower 60s. But we are about to change things just a bit. More 60s for lows and fewer 50s. But not much hotter during the daytime. Rain, I hardly know you.

The on again/off again relationship with drought that we’ve had for the last 4 to 5 years continues to escalate back into “going steady” mode. Drought now covers over 80 percent of the Houston region, with over 25 percent classified as severe or extreme. Do we expect rain over the next week or so?

Not really, but as Eric noted yesterday, it does appear that some kind of system is poised to impact the area around next weekend, so perhaps we will be able to ease up a little bit on the drought if that comes through. In the meantime, it’s just more of the same, really.

### Today through Sunday

If it’s not wall to wall sunshine this weekend, it’ll be close. We probably stand to see some higher clouds on Sunday, but today and tomorrow look like sunscreen and ozone days. Ground ozone will be high, so air quality will be poor. Highs should be in the mid-80s today and tomorrow and lower 80s on Sunday with the clouds. Overnight lows in the 60s will be held up a bit as humidity slowly returns. Winds will be gusty at times, especially Saturday.

### Early next week

Cloud cover should persist to some extent early next week with just a stray shower chance, mainly south or west of Houston. Highs will be in the low to mid 80s and lows should continue in the 60s.

### Later next week

Obviously with Halloween next Saturday, everyone is focused on that forecast. It does still appear that some kind of system will impact us Friday or Saturday. If I had to place bets, I would probably put most of my chips on Saturday right now. **That does not mean Halloween will be a washout** ; things could easily push through 12 hours before evening fun or even after midnight. Or the forecast could change completely We’re not good enough at this to tell you specifically 8 days in advance. However, the timeline of a system with potential for rain and thunderstorms either Friday or Saturday is the going forecast right now.

One thing to watch will be to see if the remnant moisture of what should become [major Hurricane Vance this weekend](https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_ep2+shtml/230859.shtml?cone#contents) can get funneled into the U.S. and hook up with this system late next week. So, yes, that could be able to produce locally decent rainfall. But could that go into interior Texas? Not make it here at all? More questions than answers right now, but let’s hope for some rain — just not around Trick or Treat time!

So far everyone’s El Nino forecast for this area is a total bust. November is pretty much here, just another dry winter. Yawn. Pretty disappointing given the fact the whole state has been dry for the last 5 or more years.

55 here in League City, severe drought. All grass areas are browning, and slabs are shifting. You’d think we’d had a frost/freeze with the brown grass.

Until it is actually pouring rain in my yard, I won’t believe any rainfall forecast from this point on.

A long time ago, I abandoned any belief of credible weather forecasts. I’m not a meteorologist, so I have no intimate knowledge of how forecasts are formulated, but they are simply just too inaccurate the majority of the time. I laugh out loud when I see things like “10 Day Forecasts”. I only trust two sources of weather info: 1) Walking outside to see/feel what is really happening, and 2) The radar.

Basically what it boils down to. Just look at a radar app and that’s going to tell you if rain is coming or not.

Already the news stations are all excited about 30-40% rain for Halloween 🤡 😂

I’m old enough to remember when the news stations only had 3-day forcasts. Then it went to 5-day to 7-day and now 10-day forcasts. I remember just shaking my head when they came out with the 10-day forcasts. 😅

In the end, it’s all about taking a mathematical climate model—which is itself just a digital approximation of how we believe a massively analog and very real interlinked set of climatological systems interact—and running that model a bunch of times with small tweaks and seeing what the different outcomes look like. You do it enough times with enough models and throw away the outlier results, and an overall shape tends to emerge. There’s your forecast.

On one hand, we’ve gotten pretty darn good at inferring the real-world behavior of complex systems using models that approximate those systems’ behaviors—not just in weather forecasting, but in basically _everything_, from physics to cosmology to immunology to most other -ologies you can think of. On the other hand, projecting out what “the weather” is going to be in the future by consulting a model that itself only approximates how the climate actually works has its limits, and 10 day forecasts are kind of gimmicky for anything other than really really broad trends.

On top of it being very dry, im very concerned about the continue blowtorch of this climate. Sure there’s a break right now but the start of Torchvember is looking just insane heat and humidity right now. It’s looking like another year where the “fall” temperature record will be challenged again. People on other weather forums just do not understand how bad the climate has become here. This is the only weather place that can understand my extreme cynicism. If this El Niño fails to produce at least a cooler winter and last years winter is repeated then we are lost….im very very pessimistic right now. It’s like 3 decades of warming got compressed into 4-5 years.

Have to take the small wins where available. 55 is actually 4 degrees below the lagging average low temp of 59. Enjoy it while it lasts cuz I’m sure Torchvember will open with days of 88/75.

Far too early for that talk. El Nino is usually a wetter winter/spring than fall. Very little correlation between fall here and what happens 6 months from now.
